I lean primarily towards the ‘self psychology’ frame which holds a particular focus on the combination of ‘introspection and empathy’. As a practitioner, I have a defined ‘experience-near’ approach as opposed to the ‘experience-distant’ approach of other more traditional psychological modalities. I also lean very often on variants of the positive psychology modality such at CBT/DBT & ACT techniques.

I acknowledge and appreciate that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach when it comes to mental health and pride myself on my adaptability to draw on the relevant skills and approaches that best suit each client and their presenting problem and needs.

Regardless of the client or the issue at hand my work is underpinned by an unwavering level of empathic attunement, respect, unconditional positive regard and non-judgement.

Although I work with most areas within my scope of practice- my areas of focus include the following:

  • The support of externally diagnosed conditions such as anxiety, depression, and eating related issues (Note: psychological and psychiatric diagnosis in South Africa can only be offered by an HPCSA registered clinical psychologist or psychiatrist. That being said, the counsellor is trained to notice symptoms that may warrant a referral to one of the above practitioners).
  • Stress, self-esteem and self-improvement.
  • Life transitions.
  • Grief & loss.
  • Relationship issues (Note: in individuals, I do not work with couples).
  • The general enhancement of overall well-being.
